2026 March Southern US Border going West

Finished up the final Doctor appointments in Florida, its time to head west to spend summer with family. Taking my time of course for the weather is just beginning to warm. I go north first and see Doug, Amanda, Zach for a few days.

We boys had fun working together on house improvements, it sure is nice to work together, chatting, probably one of the very best times together! Following a healthy meal together I head west.

Back on the western travel I stop several times and take a day or two to relax, see local sights. I have been this way many times and occasionally see something new. Tallahassee had a Civil War Reenactment nearby. I was there early in the day, and the tents were not really open to visitors for they were eating breakfast. I was looking at the traveling forge and the gent came up and shared allot of information of how traveling forge worked. Pretty interesting how each unit had a forge to repair things!

Another stop at a campground and a neighbor came over to chat, she smoked allot of weed and kept up a running chatter! Funny lady.

Another stop and I meet fellow WIN's Angel and John. They live outside New Orleans and are fairly new to RV travel. We enjoyed a couple of days sharing ideas, chatting. AND Angel taught me how to make Shrimp Creole, gumbo, Etouffee!

My notes:

Next stop was at the Acadian Village, lots of interesting things to see. Also the write up matches the Canadian version! Read the history on this flyer.

Wellhead

Dental tools

Next stop I played over at a Day's End Directory location in Venice, TX called Delta Dawn Casino and Racetrack. Just like another place, I wake to thundering hooves as the racecourse are being trained and exercised on the track! Awesome to watch this while having my morning coffee!

I go on to Galveston Island, TX and visit Linda a WIN member i have traveled with.
We explored Galveston historic homes and biked around to see Tree Sculptures. After hurricanes the damaged trees would be carved into sculptures!

The land was raised 18" following a hurricane, all except the fences!

The city has a program that Oak trees damaged in hurricanes to be carved, numerous tree sculptures here.

The City of Galveston also had a St Patrick's day parade, Island style!

On to Doyle Pollard Elks Care RV Park in Ottine, TX. The children's home across the street is open June, July.

The town of Luling, TX has a story of oil booms right inside town. The older well pumps have been decorated with pictures by local artist Goerge Kalesik.

Great museum of local oil drilling history

Oh my, I finally went to a Buckee's to see what the attraction is.

I stayed over 2 nights to catch up on laundry, wash the RV and truck. was planning on going to see LBJ Presidential Library and searched this blog and discovered I have already seen it!

Meeting Minnie a friend from WIN's at Fredericksburg,  TX I do visit LBJ boyhood home.

Next, I visited LBJ Ranch. The house itself is closed for renovations until late 2027. But the barn was open. Across the river is a Texas state park of another ranch.

My biggest wow, how milk was processed back then. Sitting for 3 days it evaporate and then is run through cheesecloth to make cheese!

We decided to drive to Luckenbach,  TX of country music fame for lunch and listen to music.

Not too loud, good hamburgers!

Fort Martin Scott, first Army Fort in the Texas Hill country. Good easy tour!

Hmmm, I've never seen this label before!

Nor these either

Shawna joins Minnie and I for a few days, these pictures are in a small museum in Kerrville, TX where the flood one year ago killed so many people.

Desert flowers

Traveled 2 lane roads to Iraan, TX. A tiny town with 3 city parks, full hookup for $20 night! Good deal! Sit out the cold front with high winds 2 nights.
Went and explored nearby Fort Lancaster. Pretty cool visit, the ranger was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

The actual fort buildings remaining

This map gave us great ideas of a future RV trip.

After leaving discovered a picnic area great for boondocking.  Later I checked and it was already in Day's End Directory.

Minnie and I left Fredericksburg, TX for a long-awaited visit to Big Bend National Park. We had been following the weather for extreme temperatures both cold and hot are prevalent. Unfortunately, the Heat Dome that had been hovering over the southwest decided to move into our area. So, we only stayed one night and left for Davis Mountain State Park where we at 5K elevation and had electric available also.

The Ocotillo was flowering!

This Yucca called the 100 year plant only blooms once in its lifetime.

What an unusual curvature for this Yucca

McDonald Observatory, I toured the information center too.

Little town of Ft Davis, TX courthouse is impressive.

I took a 3 mile hike and found a few flowering cactus

Nice view of Cottonwood trees in the valley

Another view of McDonald Observatory
Tomorrow Minnie and I part ways, she is returning to Oklahoma to plant her garden, I'm continuing to Oregon for family and fishing!
