2023 September Halifax, Nova Scotia, Hurricane Lee

 I left a day early because the Canadian Navy is having Fleet Week in Halifax. This is where you can go on board and tour their warships. This one was commissioned in 2021 - brand new! all the ships I served on were WWII era. All the computers on board here was astounding. This ship was built not as a warship but to patrol Artic waters, can be an icebreaker, research vessel, carrying National Fisheries staff to enforce fishing laws.

These 2 men had served together during their Navy career and just now met up after retirement.

Most of these pictures cane from Georges Island where Marsha and I toured the old fort.

The docents here were college students dressed in WWII uniforms. Zoom in to above the window, notice the bar with collars on them, I had never seen this before at these type of forts. Apparently it is to hang a drape and prevent the enemy seeing that there is a sally port here.

Another day and touring the Citadel, of course once riffled cannon was invented the purpose of fortifications was lost. Here the whole WIN's gang walking up onto the parapet.

Daily at noon the cannon is fired using black powder, the Sargent looks over the firing range and decides when is the right (safe) time to fire.

Ahhh, has anyone ever wondered what is under the skirt???? I asked and received a palm up as a response, hahaha.

Tuesday we went to the Maritime Museum, great small sailing craft (actual sailboats), large scale models of cruise liners, many of which were lost at sea, Titanic display (many of the recovered bodies are buried in Halifax.

OH NOoooooooo, Hurricane Lee has been predicted to come right where we are. We have been watching closely and have decided that early departure is prudent. The remaining stops on this circuit Lunenburg and Annapolis Royal will be seen on another trip someday.

We decided to move west to Moncton, NB and then to Edmonston, NB then on to Quebec City, QB. I took the opportunity to cross over to the US for refuel and saved $3.00 a gallon or $75. savings! 9 yes, cheap bastard and proud of it!

2023 September, Cape Briton, Cabot Trail, Canada

 Travel day going between Prince Edward Island and Cape Briton Highlands I stopped at The Museum of industry in New Glasgow, NB. This museum was well laid out moving progressively through time to show industrial development of the Maritimes. Early days showed trades common for the period and location - farmer, blacksmith, carpenter, barrel maker, housewife and as new industry came the trades changed as well.

Investors from Great Britton developed the coal mines, very large veins were located here and huge industry to extract coal. Trains and ships to move the coal, supporting industries. Later metal manufacturing, and now farming, sea products such as lobster mussels, scallops and finally tourism.

This is a very good museum with volunteers to demonstrate some of the trades tools.

First day in Cape Breton Highlands we all felt that driving the whole Cabot Trail was in order. Of course, I take the motorcycle for the 200-mile road trip over some beautiful coastline, high plateau, Aspy fault. 

Today the morning was cloudy with periodic rain, so I stopped at a bakery for coffee and snack to wait the weather out a little. Several other motorcycle riders had the same idea, I sat next to a couple who had ridden up from Boston, MA to spend a week touring. The are originally from South Africa and had some British accent and we had a very enjoyable conversation sharing thoughts and ideas about touring.

Some of the other WIN's stopped to hike certain trails but I felt that I would be hard pressed to make the 200-mile trip on the motorcycle just stopping at roadside pullouts for scenic views. So, I continued on. Before I was halfway through I was able to get gas for the motorcycle has a fuel range of 150 miles. I definitely felt better once I fueled up.

At the center of the island on the northern most area is Aspy Fault. This is a tectonic plate that dropped many years ago and runs deep undersea from here. You can see the ridge very clearly here making spectacular foliage views. Soon I believe there will be foliage color everywhere for I see changes happening all around us.

Alexander Graham Bell is credited for inventing the telephone, yet there are other things he invented. Bell moved to Baddeck, NS for half the year each year to raise his family. He continued experimenting with many different ideas. This museum showed some of his family life but mostly his interest in inventing things.

Over near the town of Iona is the Highlands Village, this is a town they built by bringing authentic building from the area to one spot. The docents were dressed in Scottish garb for the period of time they are representing. Each building in sequence started in the mid 1700's through 1925. In one a woman was baking biscuits on a wood stove!
